Hail Register Marriages!

[I quote below relevant portions of the Registeration of Marriage Act, which proves that marriages can be conducted without any expense. We often blame the politicians for the ills of our country. But it is politicians who have enacted such an Act and it is we, the populace who always criticise the politicians, who act so immoraly when we conduct expensive marriages and take it that there is no honourable alternative. Shame on us.]
Maharashtra Regulation of Marriage Bureaus and Registration of Marriage Act, 1998.

The application for registration of marriage shall be in Form “D” and it shall be accompanied by the following documents:

(1) Age proof of the bride and bridegroom.

(a) Attested xerox copy of school/college leaving certificate or attested xerox copy of the SSC passing certificate (any one of the above).

(2) Evidence regarding place of residence of bide and bridegroom.

(a) Attested xerox copy of the ration card or the attested xerox copy of the election identity card issued by the election commission or attested xerox copy of the passport (any of the above.

If in case the parties are not having any of the above evidences

i) Light bill or telephone bill of the residential premises or if tenant, then certificate from the Society (any of them).

(3) Evidences to be produced by the 3 witnesses for the marriage registration.

(a) Attested xerox copy of the ration card or the attested xerox copy of the election identity card issued by the election commission or attested xerox copy of the passports. In the case of government servants attested xerox copy of the identity card.

(4)(a) The place of the solemnization of marriage must have to be within the state of Maharashtra only.

(b) The court fees of Rs.50 must have to be affixed.

(c) Marriage registration fee of Rs. 50 (within a time limit of 90 days) in cash has to be deposited (monthly ……. Rs.100/- and if one year Rs.200.)

(d) The memorandum/application of the intended marriage i.e. the form “D” must be signed by the bride and bridegroom and the 3 witnesses before the marriage officer only.


Provisions to be followed by the parties for registration of Marriage under special marriage Act, 1954.

1. Evidence regarding place of residence of bride and bridegroom.

A) Attested xerox copy of the ration card or the attested xerox copy of the election identity card issued by the election commission or the attested xerox copy of the passport (any of the above).

If in any case the parties are not having any of the above evidences:

A) Attested xerox copy of the birth certificate or attested xerox copy of the school/college leaving certificate or attested xerox copy of the SSC passing certificate (any of the above).

3. At the time of solemnization of marriage, 3 witness are required to be present before the marriage officer.

4(a) The notice of the intended marriage shall be in the prescribed proforma only after affixing passport size photos of the bride and bridegroom and 3 witnesses over it.

(b) The marriage will have to be solemnized after the completion of the 30 days from the notice of intended marriage and thereafter within 90 days, the marriage has to be solemnized.
