Pramod Mahajan’s replacement.

20.05.2006

The press speculation about the Mahajan replacement BJP would come up with is a wee bit mischievous. The talk of his son Rahul being brought in or Varun being enlisted is the type of speculation that a RSS powered BJP should do without. We need to have leaders come up the ranks. We must ensure that each and every BJP leader is a swayamsevak who has finished 3rd year OTC and has been a pracharak for at least 4 years. How can anyone understand the Sangha (particularly if he is going to be a political leader through BJP) unless he has been baptized in it? Without understanding Sangha, how would he be in a position to take BJP in the right direction? Whether it is Varun or Rahul, so long as they have not had their initiation in the RSS, they should not be considered for any leading role in the BJP. Why is such a policy difficult to implement? The BJP cannot afford to think just from election to election if it is to be a moral force in Indian politics. It has to think in terms of moulding the coming generations.

As far a BJP membership is concerned, I think it should be open only to those who are swayamsevaks. If it is objected to because membership of a political party ought to be open to all citizens, we can point out that all Indians are eligible to become swayamsevaks. We should insist that all Indians should be swayamsevaks (a volunteer to upholding nationalism) and membership to BJP should be restricted to swayamsevaks as the BJP has to be moulded into a political instrument of Nationalism.

I must add here that this idea that each political party should be open to all Indians to be members is unfair. The political party should be given the freedom to choose the type of politics it wants to pursue (subject of course to the constitutional propriety) and the type of members it wants. How can anyone command a party unless he has a party of his choice? How can any general command an army unless he has an army that is loyal to him?
