Amrita TV

[In response to what I feel is some swayamsevaks' unnecessary critique of Amrita TV]

I suggest we leave Amrita TV alone. Haindava Keralam is a Sangha inspired site. Let us seek to improve ourselves instead of wasting our energy elsewhere. Having a channel like Amrita TV where we can have darshan of Amma regularly is in itself a major blessing. Let us not try to teach Amma how to run things. Let us have faith in her that she knows best and in the meantime seek to strengthen Sangha in every which way.

Amrita Mission is running hospitals, schools and commercial channels with the money of Hindu Public. For a Sanyasin or individual, living on public support and contributions, has a responsibility to its nourisher(s). Lord Rama had listened to public opinion...and that is one of the morals of Ramayana. In a democratic country, a charitable institution, which enjoys tax benefits due its stated adherence and commitment to public service is open to criticism and correction, as far as its trustees are humans and indian citizens.

I am somewhat amused by anonymous's reply. Saying that Amrita Mission is running its activities with public money is to be oblivious to the fact that public money is flowing into Amrita Mission because of the spiritual solace that Mata Amritanandamayi brings to many who have nothing more than money and find their life meaningless. When such moneyed people are touched by spirituality, they offer to Amma money as a thanksgiving and what else can Amma do with the money except use it for public benefit? The commentator makes it appear that Mother is hard up to run her institutions for the masses and the public is doing her a favour. It is the other way round, friend.

The commentator also says Sanyasins are living on public support and contributions and therefore have a responsibility towards "its nourishes". Sanyasins live on the merit of their spiritual prowess - had they wanted society to be their nourishes, they would have become householders instead. If they move in society at all, it is only because they are ready to serve society out of compassion.

Lord Rama was an avatar playing the role of a King and not that of a sanyasin, therefore he had to "listen" to public opinion. Sanyasins don't have to do that - they only to follow the dictates of Dharma.

Please do not assume that institutions of spiritual luminaries like Amma are mere charitable institutions. Charitable institutions are those formed by mere mortals with a sense of moral responsibility. Institutions formed by spiritual giants like Amma are outlets to transfer the benefits of their spiritual benediction to the masses at large. Such institutions would inevitably occur even if there are no 'tax benefits'. And such institutions have a greater sense of responsibility - not just responsibility because they are bound by taxation laws!
